The course provides a holistic understanding of land-use systems in rural, peri-urban, and urban areas, viewing them as interconnected socio-ecological systems. It focuses on the interactions between agricultural and forestry land-use systems, natural resources, and socio-economic conditions, as well as on the different development pathways of cities towards more sustainable and resilient urban systems. The course explores various forms of sustainable land use and agriculture alongside different types of sustainable cities and their systemic characteristics. The aim is to understand rural, peri-urban, and urban areas within a broader socio-ecological context and to analyze their interactions and potential for sustainable development.
