Emerging water shortages are becoming a global challenge for food crop production. One of the advocated soltutions is the use of water-saving production strategies. Using the example of lowland rice in West Africa, the potentials of “alternate wetting and drying” as the most widely advocated water-saving strategy in rice will be analyzed and possible trade offs are discussed.
